Who is the spirit of mammon?

Mammon is an actual evil spirit that strives to influence us with money and material possessions. When one is serving the spirit of mammon, it might involve working ungodly high-paying jobs. It could also involve working a job that isn’t necessarily ungodly but while working there, your only motivation is to do whatever it takes to make more money, no matter the means. The spirit of mammon wants your soul, just like any other evil spirit. This spirit uses the illusion of money and wealth to drag people to hell for eternity.

Let’s look at a few examples to understand how this spirit works. Jim is a very successful person by the world’s standards. He is an engineer in a highly specialized field. He lives in a top-floor penthouse with a pool, has a collection of expensive cars, and is regularly invited to exclusive events. This is a life that many people long for because they think that it will bring them happiness. Jim becomes accustomed to this lifestyle and starts to take it for granted and even gets bored with it. Out of the blue, the company that he’s working for goes out of business and he is out of a job. Because he was working in a highly specialized field, it isn’t very easy for him to find another job. Especially one that pays as well as his former job did. He starts to get into panic mode, wondering how he will pay his mortgage, car notes, and overall lifestyle. He’s become so accustomed to his lifestyle that he doesn’t know how he will live without his penthouse, his luxury cars, etc. They’ve become idols in his life and deep anxiety starts to fill his world. He starts to think about how everything that he has worked so hard for will be gone if he doesn’t do something quickly. This is usually when that mammon spirit will come in, knowing that Jim is desperate. He gives him some ideas that will allow him to keep all the stuff.

As an engineer, Jim learned a lot about technology. Thoughts started coming into his head about hacking. Hacking people’s bank accounts. He also remembered that at the events he would go to, people would be on drugs. He thought about selling drugs since he would have a stable clientele. He starts considering these things because of fear. Fear of losing it all. Fear of starting over. What would all of his friends think? This mammon spirit will make it seem like doing ungodly work is your only choice. When in reality he just wants to get us deep into sin and further from God. Mammon will never mention that ‘when’ not ‘if’, you get caught doing these illegal activities, you’ll lose everything anyway. He’ll have you so caught up in holding on so tightly to all that you have, that you won’t even think about the consequences. Jim has never been one to break the rules, but this spirit has made it seem so appealing, that breaking the law doesn’t seem so bad to him anymore. Mammon’s goal is to completely ruin our lives and destroy our souls.

Let’s look at another example. Roy is a very wealthy entrepreneur and has pretty much everything that he could ever want. He gets excited about his new watches and cars when he first gets them, but soon becomes bored of them and is ready for the next thing. He has fun at events he gets invited to, but at the end of the night, he goes home and finds himself alone. Eventually, he gets tired of the same routine, seeing the same people at events, and starts feeling like life is pointless. Nothing that he has satisfies him long-term, but only gives him short boosts of dopamine. So, he starts comparing himself to his wealthy friends and sees what they have that he doesn’t have. He sees that his friend gets a private jet. So he goes out and buys one too. “Surely this will do that trick.” he thinks to himself. But of course, after a few days, he gets used to that private jet and it no longer excites him. He has all these “things” but no peace or joy. He’s in a never-ending hamster wheel. When he has everything that the ‘world’ has to offer, then it hits him. What is really the point? That’s why many people turn to drugs or even end their lives. Most people just can’t understand why anyone would do that while ‘seemingly’ having it all. What they can’t see is that that lifestyle had no real peace, no real joy. Only plastic and paper. The worst & most sick part of it all is that mammon leads people to sin so much against God, and to live an unrepentant life, that when they die, all of the possessions that they thought would satisfy them, stay on earth while mammon leads their souls to hell to burn forever. Truly sickening.

Another manifestation of mammon is when kids are given anything and everything without earning it and become spoiled. They tend to be rude to people and really ungrateful. Most of the time, it’s because their parents serve mammon.

With Jesus as Lord, we don’t have to be scared of losing it all…because we have Jesus! He’s more valuable than anything the world can ever offer and he can’t be bought with money. As long as we serve Him in spirit and in truth, we’ll have real peace and joy forever, not just short boosts of dopamine like the world offers. We become free from pride, fear of loss, and having to be in control. We walk by faith which is true freedom. We are able to obey the Lord fully, because when he says “go” we can go without any material possessions holding us back. Trusting and obeying Jesus not only frees us from mammon’s grip who wants to lead us to hell but also allows us to live a truly fulfilling life.

How to know if you serve mammon:

1.) You won’t witness to your boss or co-workers out of fear of losing your job
2.) You won’t leave your ungodly job or a job that isn’t ungodly but God has told you to leave out of fear of not having money.
3.) You have anxiety over not making enough money or having to make more.
4.) Your main daily focus is how to make more money instead of how to obey God
5.) You don’t ever give. You’re stingy.
6.) Your biggest fear is losing all your money
7.) Your main dream/goal in life is to be wealthy
8.) If you relate to the quote “money is the motivation.”
9.) You believe money will sustain you over God
10.) You believe that when you’re wealthy, all of your problems will go away and you’ll be secure.

-Material possessions can be here one second and gone the next
-You can’t take it with you after you pass away
-If you depend on money over God, not only will you use separate from all your wealth when you die but you’ll also burn in hell forever because money can’t save your soul only Jesus can!
